Background of the Study
Secret societies have historically played influential roles in various Nigerian communities, and their presence in Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State, is no exception. These organizations, often steeped in tradition and mystique, are believed to affect both individual and collective mental health through ritualistic practices, social cohesion, and cultural enforcement (Okoro, 2023). While some community members view secret societies as custodians of tradition and order, others associate them with psychological stress and social exclusion (Amadi, 2024). Recent literature suggests that involvement in such societies can lead to both positive outcomes, such as increased social belonging, and negative consequences, including anxiety and identity conflicts (Eze, 2025). This study examines how secret societies influence mental health by exploring their roles in shaping personal identity, community norms, and coping mechanisms. The research integrates cultural psychology theories with empirical data, offering a nuanced perspective on the interplay between secrecy, tradition, and mental well-being (Ibekwe, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Secret societies in Bonny have been implicated in various social and psychological dynamics, yet their influence on mental health remains underexplored. Members and non-members alike report mixed experiences—ranging from a sense of belonging to significant psychological distress (Ndukwe, 2024). The ambiguity surrounding their role in mental health calls for a systematic investigation to discern whether these groups contribute positively or negatively to individual and collective well-being. This study addresses this gap by examining the psychological implications of secret society participation in Bonny (Akinola, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the influence of secret societies on individual mental health.

  2. To assess the collective psychological impact of these groups on the community.

  3. To recommend strategies for mitigating any adverse mental health outcomes.

Research Questions:

  1. How do secret societies affect individual mental health in Bonny?

  2. What are the collective psychological impacts of secret society practices?

  3. What interventions can address negative mental health effects associated with these groups?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Participation in secret societies is associated with significant psychological stress.

  2. Collective practices of secret societies influence community mental health.

  3. Community interventions can reduce the negative mental health impacts of secret society involvement.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical examination of the impact of secret societies on mental health, offering insights that can inform community mental health initiatives and policy interventions. The findings will assist stakeholders in addressing both the positive and negative influences of these groups on individual and collective well-being (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to examining the influence of secret societies on mental health in Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State, and does not extend to other regions or non-psychological impacts.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Secret Societies: Traditional groups with exclusive membership and ritualistic practices.

  • Collective Mental Health: The overall psychological well-being of a community.

  • Individual Mental Health: The mental and emotional state of a single person.
